If you are a full-time student, please review Carnegie Mellon's Student Health Insurance Policy. As defined in this policy, you must carry adequate medical insurance that meets certain requirements. Additionally health insurance can be purchased for families and domestic partners.

Each enrollment year, full-time students are charged for Carnegie Mellon's lowest premium contracted medical insurance plan. You'll find Enrollment Services Student Fee Assessment rules, including those for the charging of the default insurance premium, here. If a student does not want to enroll in that plan, he or she must complete a waiver form to have the charge removed, or an enrollment form (see below) to choose Carnegie Mellon’s higher premium contracted medical insurance plan.
Our insurance enrollment year runs August 1 though the following July 31. New plans start each August 1.

Carnegie Mellon also offers student optional Dental and Vision insurance. Follow the Dental or Vision link here for details regarding those plans.
Also in the Fall or Spring open enrollment periods, you may add your family or domestic partner to the plan you select for yourself. You have to be enrolled in the plan in order to enroll your family members (spouse and children) or domestic partner. They cannot enroll if you don't enroll yourself. You use the full-year enrollment form in this case for you, and, if desired, your spouse and children.
Outside of the open enrollment periods, you can add your family if they have just arrived in the states, if they lost their prior health insurance within the last 30 days, or, in the case of your newborn child, within 30 days of the baby's birth. You can not, however, leave your family uninsured and then attempt to insure them when a medical claim arises. This is considered adverse selection, and the insurance company will not approve an enrollment under those circumstances.
If you are adding family members outside of the open enrollment period, we'll ask you to verify they've just arrived, or that they lost prior insurance coverage within the last 30 days. If you yourself are already enrolled, you use a change of enrollment form to add additional family members.
