Averting Problems
Since you are consulting this website, you probably need some advice on how to handle a current problem. In that case, click here Who do you talk to? And how? or follow the link on the left. But if you want some advice on how to avoid future problems, here are some tips:
- Keep communication open between you and your advisor and between you and others you interact with. It feels very good to have a conversation where everyone agrees on the task(s) at hand.
- Understand what is expected of you in class, in the lab and to complete your degree. Get policies in writing, ask questions, state what your expectations are. Keep written records.
- Ask for feedback. If you are the kind of person who needs lots of feedback but your advisor thinks you're doing fine on your own, speak up and ask for more frequent meetings.
- Talk to more senior graduate students, who can be a wonderful source of advice and information
