- Convincing statement of potential general value of a successful effort to society.
- Case for potential contributions to advancing knowledge and/or the state of the art in your own, and related, fields of study.
- Cost-sharing with department/college or other sponsors (list these funds in the budget)
- Very clear budget, budget justification, itemization of GuSH or FORD funds allocation
- Detailed projection/hypothesis about what your findings will be
- Thesis/hypothesis/theory clearly explained
- Project timelines
- Good advisor letter/specificity about financial need
GENERAL ADVICE on WRITING SUCCESSFUL FUNDING PROPOSALS
There are two major types of funders of research currently being done at CMU across the disciplines: federal agencies and non-profits/foundations. While specifics may vary by discipline/field of study, there are some general criteria for successful funding applications to these two types of funders.

- Equipment (but if capital equipment, must donate to graduate program when finished)
- No stipend, no tuition - for GuSH*
