Solar Decathlon House

The Solar Decathlon team combines the talents from three local schools

In 2007 Carnegie Mellon University created a multi-disciplinary team within the university with the CFA Schools of Art, Architecture, Design and Drama, CIT, the Tepper School and ICES and collaborated with the University of Pittsburgh and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.  The team designed and constructed TriPOD, an 800 sq.ft. home. In addition, they are simultaneously competing against and collaborating with the Technical University - Darmstadt to demonstrate global ideas of sustainable housing. CMU also partnered with the CMNH Powdermill Nature Reserve, where the house will be permanently installed at the end of the competition.  For more information on the 2007 competition, including participants, visit the Solar Decathlon website.

In 2005 Carnegie Mellon created Pittsburgh Synergy, a collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, local trades and manufacturers. The house is now permanently installed on the CMU campus as an environmental classroom.

Carnegie Mellon's Solar Decathlon is taught by Stephen Lee. It is part of DOE's Solar Decathlon Competition.
