Students prepare the plantings for the new green roof.
The course/group independent study was initiated after four years of advising an evolving group of students researching living roofs. Students participated in design discussions, met with the contractors, and a green roof specialist regularly, in the end student input became part of the final design and students actually planted the roof. With the students impetus and advisors the Green Practices Committee became involved to help plan and raise funds, then locate Hamerschlag Hall as a likely candidate to demonstrate the sustainable value of a green roof. After the design was complete students created a green roof manifesto to encourage policy for future green roofs on campus. Part of this strategy involved locating, designing and installing green roof systems on three different roofs.
