A Life Cycle of Jeans

Old jeans can be made into insulation for houses. We discussed this creative option with the young people in our classes.

The aim of this project was to teach young people about the life cycle of a pair of jeans using a hands-on, comprehensive approach to environmental science. Our project followed a pair of jeans through every stage of its existence, from conception to disposal. This included growing and processing natural resources, manufacturing and dyeing, transportation to retail stores, advertisement, purchase, storage and disposal. Our goal was to get young people thinking about the total environmental impact of the objects they purchase. We presented the project to about 40 young people ages 10 to 20.

Participants: Anusha Balasubramanian, Carla Betancourt, Isabella Cederquist, Subhashini Katumuluwa, Sarah Gillmeister, Patricia Stallings
