Wanted: Your Fun Ideas for a Chapter Activity
We need your ideas for a fun get together for the CMU chapter! Last May, chapter members gathered together for wine, cheese and an informal discussion among faculty from Design and Psychology. It was a chance to meet other members, enjoy some good food and find out what research faculty are pursuing. Attendees also received the "official" Phi Kappa Phi CMU chapter baseball shirt. We can reprise the wine and cheese event, get together for a play or other performance - whatever people find interesting. Send your idea(s) to Nancy Klancher by FRIDAY, APRIL 4, at klancher@andrew.cmu.edu.

PKP Commencement Weekend Induction and Reception
On Friday evening, May 16, chapter members are invited to a joint Phi Kappa Phi/Phi Beta Kappa reception in Rangos Hall, UC. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., we will induct new members into the chapter. Join your fellow chapter members to welcome the new members and congratulate the graduates.

MEMBER NEWS

Chapter Selects Jordan Green as Graduate Fellowship Nominee
JORDAN GREEN, a senior in Chemical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering, has been selected as the CMU chapter's nominee for the National Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship.

The national fellowship is for $8,000 for the first year of graduate study. The national runner-up receives $1,500 for the first year of graduate school. The decision now lies in the hands of the National Headquarters of Phi Kappa Phi, and we should hear by April 15 of the outcome of the competition.

The other students who were considered for the fellowship--ADAM HARBER, DEMETRIOS PANAGIOTOU, EARL SOLIS, SHANNA TELLERMAN and JAMES WERTMAN--have received Certificates of Academic Excellence from the chapter for their applications. The first runner up was Shanna Tellerman, a senior in Art and the student vice president of the CMU chapter. You can view Shanna's work on the chapter website at http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/org/pkp/.

MCS Associate Dean Steps into Chapter Presidency
ERIC GROTZINGER, associate dean of the Mellon College of Science and principal lecturer in Biological Sciences, will take over as chapter president in the May 16 induction ceremony. Statistics Professor STEPHEN FIENBERG served as president over the past year.

ARTIST AND SCHOLAR AWARDS COMPETITION

Phi Kappa Phi grants awards for a scholar and an artist at each of the five regional Mid-Triennial conferences. These awards are designed to recognize achievement in scholarly work and artistry by chapter members. Chapters may submit one name each for the two awards.

The Artist and Scholar recipients must agree to make a presentation at the NE Regional Triennial Conference on Friday (artist) Sept. 19, and Saturday (scholar), Sept. 20, 2003, in Norfolk, Virginia. The winners' rooms, meals and transportation expenses will be fully reimbursed.

Eligibility Criteria:
1. The nominee must be an ACTIVE MEMBER (current in payment of national dues) of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at the time of nomination (no later than June 1, 2003).

2. The nominee must be a member of the chapter submitting the nomination. A chapter may submit a nomination for an alumna/alumnus providing the person has not transferred membership to a different chapter.

3. The nominee is the sole person nominated by a chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for the 2003 Northeastern Region Scholar (or Artist) Award and all nomination materials submitted on her/his behalf have been completed, mailed and received by the deadline of June 1, 2003. Details of where to mail the application will be provided with the announcement of the competition.

Selection Criteria:
1. The quality of accomplishments in the nominee's field of study or arts.

2. Achievements of a national and/or international scope. This includes but is not limited to publications, research grants, invited lectures, etc. for scholars; and exhibits, performances, publications, grants, etc. for artists.

3. Number and nature of honors and other forms of recognition for scholarly or artistic work.

Selection Process and Award Presentation
Nominees and presidents of nominating chapters will be informed of the results as soon as possible but not later than June 10, 2003. Arrangements for the winners' conference presentations will be made and announced as soon as possible.

Winners will receive a check for $1,000, an active-for-life membership in Phi Kappa Phi (value $300) and a framed certificate commemorating the award.

If you are interested in entering the competition, contact Nancy Klancher at klancher@andrew.cmu.edu.

CHAPTER BASEBALL SHIRTS ARE HIGH-BROW AND HIGH FASHION

Chapter members who attended last spring's wine and cheese gathering and last winter's new member induction received the one-and-only CMU chapter PKP baseball shirt. Sporting blue three-quarter-length sleeves and the distinctive Phi Kappa Phi "key" on the front, the shirt offers a tongue-in-cheek history of the society on the back. Join us at our spring get together to get your shirt!
